Why Lizzo's 100% that Bi*** Trademark is a Lesson to Creatives
Lizzo is in the midst of trademarking her infamous lyric I’m 100% that Bit** from her No. 1 hit “Truth Hurts.
She has received some negative criticism because an artist named Mina Lioness claims that she tweeted “ I had a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that Bit**” which is a direct line from Lizzo’s song.
I see this happen way too often. Just because you put it on social media doesn’t mean somebody else cannot copyright or trademark it. Trademark is about how something is being used or will be used in the market in relation to the consumer. A tweet does not show ownership, nor does that mean it is “published” by copyright standards nor does it mean somebody else can’t trademark it.
Truth hurts, but Lizzo could have made up the lyrics without know a thing about this London artist tweets we may never know. However, if Mina Lioness had copyright her genius lyric she certainly would not have had to go to twitter to demand credit because ownership would have already been obtained.
For those out there who say copyright and trademark are not valuable and not worth getting done. I believe Mina Lioness is showing us just how wrong and stinking thinking that is. Protect your work. You are brilliant!
