Beyonce Trademarking Blue Ivy
Beyonce and Jay-z are in the midst of a Trademark dispute regarding trademarking the name of their beloved daughter Blue Ivy Carter. A event planning company, also named Blue Ivy has maintained the trademark Blue Ivy since 2012 and has operated under the name Blue Ivy since 2009.
The event planning company known as Blue Ivy is fighting the BGK (Beyonce’s Company) from being able to trademark Blue Ivy because they have owned this trademark for quite a few years and they argue that the only reason BGK wants to trademark the name is to stop others from using the name.
One of the purposes of a trademark is to allow brands to protect their intellectual property i.e. logos and art. This is so consumers (shoppers) can rely on brand recognition, and other companies can’t benefit from another company’s reputation.
One of the big arguments is that BGK has no intention of using the name BLUE IVY CARTER for consumer purposes or within the market and they should not be allowed to trademark Blue Ivy Carter simply to stop others from potentially using the name to sell goods. BGK argues that BLUE IVY CARTER is a cultural icon, therefore her name should be trademarked.
Now the board over trademark disputes has not yet ruled on this trademark and the parties are still hashing it out.
So we shall see if BLUE IVY CARTER claims her trademark.
